Al-Arabiya are reporting that a US tank burning and heavy fighting is breaking out. The fighting broke out late in the afternoon and American tanks opened
fire in the city, according to an eye witness after US forces entered
the the Al-Jumhuriya quarter. Those confrontations continued for more than half an hour and black smoke billowed into the sky over the area. The American verison of the storey differs. Lieutenant Colonel Brennan Byrne, commander of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, later said that around 7pm local time (1am AEST) two amphibious assault vehicles came under fire in the city. "Two trackers got caught up with the enemy. They came under attack, so we went right in order to trying to protect them," Byrne said, adding that warplanes were called in to give them cover. The question remains. what the assualt vehicles were doing in the are to begin with? The terms of the ceasefire were that the Americans were to withdraw to positions 5 miles oustide the city.
